As Chorus Grows Seeking Him To Step Down As Speaker, Hastert Cancels Fundraisers
From the October 5 edition of MSNBC News Live:
CORRESPONDENT CHIP REID: Then, what we're seeing, as (House Speaker Dennis) Hastert (R-IL) said today, they have canceled -- he has canceled all of his fundraisers.
You know, he was bragging recently that he was going to hit -- I think it was 34 districts in 30 days to do fundraisers. He has canceled all of his fundraisers for this week and for next week. That is big. That's a lot of money, and that's going to mean some trouble from people out there who are also going to be separating themselves from him.
We can presume that Hastert is not trying to sabotage the Republican Party, or its efforts to raise cash for various candidates less than five weeks before the November election.
So why did Hastert cancel plans? It's possible that Hastert wants to strategize/manage the ever-growing scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), in the wake of an apparent chorus of Republicans who want Hastert to step down as speaker.
It could also be that Hastert canceled his plans, before too many Republicans nixed Hastert appearances. Earlier today, Rep. Ron Lewis (R-KY) canceled an event at which Hastert was scheduled to appear.
As Joe Scarborough --- Joe Scarborough? -- said yesterday, Hastert is a "dead man walking" among Republicans.
