Increasingly Desperate Santorum Wrongly Links Arab News Network Al Jazeera To Opponent. Now His Spokeswoman Says Mistake Doesn't Matter

In response to a July 20 speech on "Islamic fascism" by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), a commentary appeared on the Al Jazeerah website with the tagline "Don't ask Santorum to 'apologize,' folks. Vote Democratic."

That led a host of conservative blogs to gawk loudly. Did an infamous Arab television network just endorse Santorum's Democratic rival, Bob Casey Jr.? Could this be the manna from the heavens Santorum would need to turn around his campaign for re-election, and close Casey's double-digit lead?

Conservatives prayed hard. Santorum's increasingly desperate campaign pushed the story to a reporter from the Allentown Morning Call, and Santorum himself repeated the claim on the July 27 edition of Fox News Channel's O'Reilly Factor.

One problem. the Morning Call reporter determined that Al Jazeera, the news network, didn't write the commentary. Instead, it was Al Jazeerah, a site launched by Dr. Hassan A. El-Najjar, a professor at Dalton State College, in Dalton, Ga.

Oops!

Santorum hasn't apologized for his mis-statement. Santorum's spokeswoman, Virginia Davis, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that it doesn't make a difference. "We thought we should share these kind of sentiments." And as far as I can tell, O'Reilly hasn't corrected the mistake, either.

Voters will soon agree. All these desperate stunts from Santorum won't make a difference, once Casey defeats him in November.

Santorum to list endorsement from his tapeworm Trumpets campaign boost from "insider" in Washington!

I'd like to say this is sarcasm, but anymore sarcasm just seems to be a way to get a slight jump on the desperate GOP. And the lag time is getting shorter and shorter.

A while back I read an account of an exchange between a top W media adviser and either a Democratic operative or a reporter, I can't remember which. The gist of the story is that when the other fellow pointed to a blatant inaccuracy spoken by some Repub pol as an example of ineptitude, W's guy was not upset at all. He said something to the effect "yeah, but it is out there now".In other words a demonstrably false factoid was already being spread by the RW megaphone thereby shaping and distorting the political discourse.
The Establishment Democrats still act as if these guys are honorable but aggressive opponents. They are not. They are proto fascists who will do anything to retain power. The sad thing is that it has worked repeatedly. The previous example was tricky Rick's comments about WMD being discovered in Iraq. He says something totally misleading and the next poll shows a huge bump in gullible Americans being swayed by the bs. Some south Florida rag misquotes Murtha and then retracts the story. But the damage is already done because Rush and his clones have embedded it in the nation's political consciousness.

The Republicans have not just internalized the wisdom of the old saw that a lie is half way around the world before truth has laced up its shoes to catch it. They have made this cynical, anti-democratic tactic the main weapon in their political arsenal.

Doesn't mater if it's wrong as long as it is "out there."

Anyone who would believe that some Arab TV station endorced Casey wouldn't be voting for Casey anyway. So all Sanscrotum did was reinforce his idiot votes.

Now what Casey should do is use that Rick being stupid clip in an ad. Should reinforce why Rickity Sanscrotum has to go.

This guy is an absolute LOON

He needs to just be voted out of office and the population of Pennsylvania should demand an apology from him for ever running for office in the first place! Geez...these people have absolutely no shame, no moral foundation, no ethical beliefs. . .just power.

so, if I compare Santorum to a tin-plated fascist with delusions of grandeur, I won't apologize, either.

You know, I hate their lack of decency/morals/ethics/honesty, but there comes a point when I think we have to say 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.'
I say Swift Boat all those rePiglican fuckers...hit 'em with a taste of their own medicine, hit 'em HARD and NEVER APOLOGIZE OR BACK DOWN.

I know it would be tough for Democrats to do this, but I think it's time.

They need to go DOWN and by any means necessary (short of violence or anything like that, obviously)

this worries me a tad, and is a good move by Santorum......... given the unenviable position he's in. His campaign is banking on a majority or Pennsylvanians not being able to sort out the truth here. I think it's a good bet. And, even if it's not Al Jazeera TV endorsing Casey, it is still "some Arab" entity, or at least an entity that sounds Arab.

Apologies can only come from those who think they've done wrong

So you can see why Rick and the other Republicans need never say they're sorry.
