And Now For Something Completely Different ...

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is holding up the Fiscal Year 2007 Legislative Branch appropriations bill over an 8 percent increase in Senate spending.

"In a time of war, rising gas prices and record deficits, increasing our own budget by an exorbitant amount sends the wrong message to the public," Coburn was quoted by CongressDailyAM.

Senate leaders hope to "quietly resolve the matter," CongressDailyAM reports. I'm guessing that's code for some sort of quid pro quo -- if not more pork for Oklahoma, then maybe giving the green light for something Coburn stands for, like further restrictions on abortion.

But that's a debate for another day. Maybe Coburn is just doing the right thing because ... it's the right thing.

That said, any authentic "fiscal conservative" effort -- vs. the bloat created by fake fiscal conservatives in the Republican-led Congress and allowed by other by fake fiscal conservatives in the Bush Administration -- is "good news."
