Stewart Fact Checks O'Reilly's False Claim About Guantanamo "Prisoners Of War"

One would think, after umpteen times of being caught as fact-challenged, Fox News Channel blowhard Bill O'Reilly would learn to stick with the truth.

Not so, as viewers of the June 13 edition of Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart learned.

O'Reilly on Monday ranted on the divide between the Bush Administration and its critics on treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba -- he implies such critics are all "liberals," which other conservatives acknowledge isn't true.

O'Reilly suggested the Bush Administration considers those at Guantanamo "prisoners of war." Stewart and the Daily Show gang knew better.

Here's a partial transcript:

STEWART: O'Reilly was there to refute Guantanamo's critics, who clearly don't understand the situation down there.

O'REILLY: The Guantanamo controversy is easy to define. The Bush Administration sees the 460 detainees as prisoners of war. The liberal press and some human rights groups believe they are criminals who are entitled to due process.

STEWART: It's simple, you stupid f***s! The Bush Administration sees them as prisoners of war, and liberal commies see it otherwise. ... Oh, I'm sorry. Condoleeza Rice -- you had something to say?

RICE (in June 19, 2005 interview with CNN): (T)hese people at Guantanamo are unlawful combatants - that is, they're not prisoners of war.

STEWART: Me thinks Bill O'Reilly needs to pay closer attention to what the White House wants him to say.

Nothing like letting a potty-mouthed punk like John Stewart prove your point. Guess he's never heard of the seven dirty words. Wonder why he bombed at the Oscars. Anyway, this is simply an issue of semantics. O'Reilly said the Bush administration "considers." them prisoners of war. He didn't say it calls them prisoners of war. It calls them enemy combatants, as Rice's comments support. Relying on a comedian to support your arguments is like counting on the ACLU to defend a Marine from being jailed before charged.

SEMANTICS?

You have to be JOKING, Patton. O'Reilly said one thing; the administration said another. Why is that DIFFICULT?

It SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU that you use name calling against Stewart as part of your LAME DEFENSE of O'Reilly.

Ditto Patton, The champions of JABBS John Stewart and Michael Moore.
Oh BTW War I love how Moore is YOUR personal hero. Its funny how you would defend a the Halliburton stock buying Moore.
What else, Flint Michigan resident? Nooooo, Bashed Bush for having an environmentally friendly ranch, but he has a home on a beautiful lake 10 acres, not to mention the penthouse in New York, insists on flying on private jets. Says white folks should hare more blacks yet he employs virtually none.
Being Anti American he told an audience in Canada that American were “nuts”, In Germany he stated: “Should suck ignorant people lead the world”, told another audience on Europe “we got that big shit-eating grin on our face all the time because our brains aren’t loaded down. He prides himself on calling American’s idiots.
Yes the Stewarts, Colberts and Moores are the fact finding apparatus of the liberals here.
Oh don’t forget our favorite liberal hero Al “Doomsday” Gore.
Classic!

Lumping together Stewart and Colbert -- who are comedians -- with Michael Moore is silly.

The truth is, Stewart caught O'Reilly spouting yet another falsehood. But rather than deal with that, you change the subject to attack Michael Moore. So typical, Snoop.

Wow that was a mature, rational and well thought-out response! You clearly are a Bill O fan. You’ve watched so much of him your brain has litteral begun to rot. We liberals have warned you all over and over again and you just don’t listen. Watching Bill O can be harmful to your health.

Stewart might be a liberal, but to say his ratings are in the toilet is jibberish. Daily Show gets more than 1 million viewers a day — more than CNN or MSNBC average in prime time. It spawned a successful spinoff in the Colbert Report. Daily Show’s “America: The Book” was a best-seller.

Typical conservative response. Name calling replaces debate. Does it make you feel smart when you put others down? Does it make you feel safe in your bubble?
