Rumsfeld Learns From Mistakes, Stops Predicting End Of Iraq War

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld declined yesterday to predict when U.S. forces would be out of Iraq.

"I've avoided predicting the timing," Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon.

Well, not exactly. In fact, Rumsfeld has made several predictions about how long troops would be needed in Iraq.

Rumsfeld may have tried to spin reporters yesterday, but history tells a different story. You'd think the Bush Administration would learn after five-plus years in office that their public statements are recorded, and can easily be used for comparison and contrast. Guess not.

Before the war began, for example, Rumsfeld made two rather rosy predications about how long troops would be needed in Iraq. In November, 2002, he said: "The Gulf War in the 1990s lasted five days on the ground. I can’t tell you if the use of force in Iraq today would last five days, or five weeks, or five months, but it certainly isn’t going to last any longer than that."

Three months later, Rumsfeld offered a similar statement: "It is unknowable how long that conflict will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months."

With President Bush now saying a future U.S. president and a future Iraqi government would decide when U.S. troops would leave, six days, six weeks and six months have been replaced with six years as a rosy prediction.

It's not that they can't learn . . .

...it's that they don't give a shit.

And no one holds them accountable.

And when someone does hold them accountable, they are immediately blasted as hating bush, un-american, soft on terror, and wimpy.

What is the pathology here?

The condition that's most associated with pathological lying is sociopathy or antisocial personality disorder, which is characterized by a lack of regard for others' feelings and manipulating others for personal gain (or sometimes just plain amusement).

Could that be Rummy?

It's the entire fucking cabal!
All of them are like this. The evil dick, the dimson, wolfowitz, condi, rummy, all of them. What I'm beginning to wonder is, are the 30% of their followers deluded or are these character traits they admire?

a lot of politicians are living in a pre-Internet world, where fact-checking on flip-flopping is harder to do. you can do a google search and find out dozens of things Rumsfeld has said about U.S. troops, and compare and contrast.

Yea, but they didn't mind predicting the WMD's ...

and they don't mind predicting the future danger of Iran...

and they don't mind predicting terrorist attacks that keep the public in their "fear" grip.

So, now they will just become selective in their predictions and ever mindful of which extreme and inaccurate predictions most benefit the empire?

I think that you make an excellent point here. At least he finally admitted he doesn't know. It's hard to predict how things are going to play out. Nice way to bring those old statements back.

Hmm Let's see here! We had an attack on the USS Cole,At least two Embasy bombings, An attempt to blow up the world trade center, And the list goes on! All of these under the watch of your Idol Clinton! And what did he do? NOTHING OF CONCEQUENCE!!! Those little bombing raids he ordered were a laugh!
The (Militant Muselam Sects)moslem countries saw this, as did the entire world! They also remember (which no doubt you don't or better WON'T) That Hillery and Bill both declaired publically their LOTHING for the military!!
I suppose you think that we should have just thrown our hands up in the air and cried UNCLE when the events of 9/11 unfolded!
So many of you all are makeing such a big thing out of the amount of casualties we have suffered during this war on terrorism ! War of any sort is an abhorant thing! But there are times you must fish or cut bait!We have tragically lost over 2,000 of our finest young people during this time (All they here over there is your whineing and complaining, never a atta boy, job well done! How do you think that affects their morral?)That figure comes down to a GUN death of approx. 15% per 100,000 Service people in Iraq and Afghanistan! In the same time period there was in our nations capitol, a GUN death ratio of 18.5% per 100,000! Perhaps we should pull out of Washington DC.!
(Oh and by the way; Washington DC. Has the strictest gun controll laws than any other place in the United States!

We can all be concerned when we have people like "concerned in Texas" above that dodge an important discussion on a presidential administration's representations of the duration of the war with irrelevant comparisons to Clinton, gun control and 9-11.

As everyone knows, that cuts both ways, rob. But aside from Bush's political enemies, who really cares? I mean, look at all of the Democrats who've said exactly all of the same things that the Bush Administration said concerning the threat they considered Saddam Hussein to be. In fact, some on your side have in the past used even stronger language to condemn that murdering dictator and his bloody regime. Are they worried about their own past comments? If they are, I haven't seen much to indicate it.

And their "flip-flops" are duplicitous, as opposed to those of Rumsfeld, who is guilty simply of being wrong in his "guesstimations".

I agree with what we are doing in Iraq. I think everybody, both Dems and Reps, were right to vote to use force to remove Hussein. As with all wars, it's difficult, even impossible, to prepare for all contingencies. So armies do what armies do. They adapt and soldier on.

Even if we knew in advance that there would be Saddam loyalists and dead-enders to deal with, I don't think we factored in that Hussein would release all of the criminals from his prisons on the eve on our invasion, or that so many foreign terrorists would flood into the country to give aid and support to Iraqi insurgents. So you deal with it. You don't whine about it. And you certainly do not try to make political hay out of it. But of course, that's exactly what some are doing, and it's very irresponsible.

Very interesting that 'concerned in texas' mentions the USS Cole.

It happened ONLY 2 months before King BushRove entered office. Only 2 MONTHS after Al Queada attacked a US military ship! Had some statute of limitations passed? Does the entrance of a new administration wipe clean everything from the past?

What did your King do? NOTHING OF CONSEQUENCE. Why, does he "loth" the military too?

Haven't seen anyone here jump to Clinton's defense... only you defending your Idol.

And what did your King do as the events of 9/11 unfolded? Ever see a deer frozen in your headlights?

Your Rush O'Hannity-inspired arguments and rationalizations are cute but tired... always amusing to people who haven't drank the KoolAid.

I come from a military family and my daughter is serving in W's War. We KNOW how much the GOP supports the troops - well demonstrated by their never-ending cuts to the budget of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

What did your King do only 2 months after the attack on the Cole? NOTHING OF CONSEQUENCE.

It is funny... you talk about Bush and his administration living in the past. Look at you people! All you do is focus on the past.

Do something with your damn lives. Make some kind of difference. This blog means shit to anyone. It is amazing that I responded.
