Conservatives Love to Discuss Mythical "Angry Left," But Rarely Refer to Actual "Angry Right"

Conservative pundits and political operatives often rally against the mythical "angry left."

"The angry left should not drive the Democrat Party," Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said last month, responding to some Democrats calling for deputy chief of staff Karl Rove to be dumped, or stripped of security clearance, following speculation that he leaked the name or identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

Before the Iowa caucus last year, Des Moines' conservative radio host, Jan Mickelson, termed Democratic caucus voters the "angry left." At about the same time, Andrew Roth of the conservative Club for Growth wrote a short piece referencing the "angry left." Washington Times columnist Greg Pierce wrote about Newsweek's Eleanor Clift and PBS' Bill Moyers under the heading "angry liberals." Earlier this year, Fox News Channel described Howard Dean as "a champion of the angry left." Michelle Malkin wrote an April column titled "When Angry Liberals Attack." MSNBC host Tucker Carlson referred to those defending a woman appealing a court case she lost as a "bunch of angry liberals" -- although he never makes clear which liberals he means. Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto frequently refers to the "angry left," such as earlier this month, when he cited the "Angry Left Daily Kos site."

***

Are there angry liberals? Sure. But conservatives give this anger mythic proportions. It's a game they have been playing for more than three decades -- since former vice president Spiro Agnew, working from a 1970 speech prepared by William Safire, told the California Republican state convention about "nattering nabobs of negativism" -- a reference to what conservatives now call "liberal media bias."

Conservatives need to promote concepts such as "angry liberals" and "liberal media bias" to justify the concept of "fair and balanced." If conservatives didn't suggest the "angry left" had mythic strength (able to overtake the Democratic Party, Mehlman and others argue), there would be no need for a conservative response. If conservatives didn't suggest liberal media bias was a problem of mythic proportions, there would be no justification for conservative talk radio, Fox News or the seemingly endless number of conservative pundits and columnists nationwide.

***

What conservatives don't want to discuss, though, is the "angry right." For example, when Laura Ingraham suggests religious profiling of Muslims is an appropriate response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, she overlooks terrorist attacks from the angry right -- such as the Oklahoma City bombing, or the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics, or any number of attacks on Planned Parenthood and similar clinics.

This "ignore the angry right" approach has been evident over the past few days, with regard to the response from some locals to Cindy Sheehan's recent anti-war protest outside the "Western White House" in Crawford, Texas.

As Jamison Foser of MediaMatters for America wrote on Aug. 19: "(A) lunatic pulls up to a fence near some peaceful anti-war protestors and fires a gun into the air in an obvious attempt at intimidation the day before another lunatic ran a pickup truck over white crosses and flags commemorating casualties of war, and there isn't nearly as much outrage."

Do a Google search for "Larry Northern" or "Larry Mattage" and you'll find little commentary from the conservative punditry. I did find this Aug. 17 gem from Taranto, who provided something of a defense for Northern, who drove over the crosses: "(A)t the same time it's important to understand what motivates people to do things like this. After all, one man's vandal is another's freedom-fighter." Malkin, describing Northern as a "nutball," used the incident as evidence of liberal hypocrisy and an introduction to another attack against Sheehan.

You see, Northern and Mattage don't fit into the conservatives' pre-conceived stereotype of who is angry. The conservative punditry has no problem telling us about how angry Sheehan is, and how she has allied herself with angry liberals like Michael Moore and the folks at moveon.org. But Northern and Mattage? There is no room for a discussion of the "angry right" among conservative pundits.

So you think Eric Rudolph was from the "right"?

You obviously have read his letters to his family. He laughed at people who claimed he was christian, and said he has no belief in God.
He done it because he was a TERRORIST, just like McVeigh. What did we do with terrorists who claim they are from the "right". We put them to death or jail, we don't excuse their actions.

Anonymous, the issue you raise isn't at all clear. Rudolph is credited with writing:

I was born a Catholic, and with forgiveness I hope to die one.

And, according to Schuster and Stone's book Hunting Eric Rudolph:

Eric Rudolph was by all accounts someone raised on the far-right fringes, who believed in the tenets of Christian Identity.

Granted his anti-gay, and racist rage is closer to neonazi than what most people consider Christianity. Still, Rudolph, himself believed he was doing "God's work" by blowing up gay bars and abortion clinics. It might be fair to say he was a Christian extremist, in the same way that the Taliban are Islamic extremists. Both fringe and well into nutland.

It isn't, however, fair to say Rudolph represents Christianity in general. Certainly every religion has it's zealot radicals and nutcases who would still be terrorists, with or without the religion they happen to wrap their acts up in. Rudolph himself said he eschewed the Bible in favor of Nietzsche (the latter having been corrupted and used by proponents of Nazi philosophy).

The more telling fact, however, is how do more "mainstream" Right wing groups attack or defend Rudolph's actions. That seems to be mixed. From what I read there is a lot of implied sympathy for his acts against abortion (ignoring his reasons).

For the record I am a proud member of the Angry Left. I don't consider myself an extremist nor crazy. What I find interesting is that Gore, Dean and other's in my group of normal, intelligent liberals and Democrats are painted as insane whenever we make a point. Compared to Zellman, Coulter and Limbaugh? Puh-lease. I'd say they are angry.

I'm a "pissed off progressive."

Pissed off about the lies, the smears, the half-truths, the double-speak, and the just plain nonsense about me, my views, and what kind of vision I have of America's potential.

Pissed off that thousands of our young people are dying because the President wanted to have a war with Saddam Hussein.

"Angry left" my ass.

Dear Anonymous:

1. I don't believe Eric Rudolph knew anything about Nietszche beyond the vague pop culture awareness of him saying something about supermen and individuals who act outside of social norms. The central tenet of Nietzsche's worldview was to question EVERYTHING: he said his fondest hope was to lose some treasured bit of conventional wisdom every day of his life. He broke off his friendship with Richard Wagner because of Wagner's increasingly rabid nationalism and hatred for Jews.

That's not very plausible as the justification for bombing abortion clinics, gay bars and the Olympics, now, is it?

Eric Rudolph citing Nietzsche has as much credibility as Ted Bundy saying he mauled and murdered young women because of pornography. Rudolph, like Bundy, was blowing smoke and playing to an audience. He's gone to jail fully committed to his deadly cause -- a man like that isn't going to say anything that would draw attention and criticism to his allies.

2. For all his vaunted skills as an outdoorsman, Rudolph very clearly could not have outfoxed the intensive manhunt for so long without substantial community help. I don't know how many people in the western end of North Carolina sleep with "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by their beds, but Rudolph's murderous anti-gay, anti-choice agenda dovetails quite neatly with that of other Christian extremist groups.

From the Ku Klux Klan to the Christian Identity movement and its offshoots, political violence in America has been largely a phenomenon of the Right.

you dont think there is an obvious angry right? Let's be realistic. It is far easier to pinpoint anger from the party not in power. The dems on the far left appear angry because they are. they cannot get any policies in place they want due to republican control and absolutely and fiercely hate all things Bush. Why argue about it. I cannot stand the religious right....these are also often the angry right but not as much when in power. They are happily power mad these days.

When Clinton was in office, i recall much ado about the angry republican right who were targeting him for impeachment.

Just words. There is anger everywhere. On both sides. Coulter is a perfect example. As is Michael Moore. Unfortunately, the true issue is that these angry groups have control of their parties, much to the detriment of our country.

WRT profiling, this is a debate that should be undertaken now. Because, once another attack occurs here, there will be a rush to profile and that will not be the time to rationally discuss it. the time is now.

Angry left, uppity women, blacks who don't know their place -- we know who they mean: anyone who dares to stand up to the rich, white men who are in power. Republicans are not going to stand up for the grassroots, even in the southern "red states", except in those places where racism, religious intolerance and bigotry are more powerful than people's own economic welfare.

Let's not misconstrue JABBS' argument.

He says there's an "angry left," but the problem is the punditry's desire to turn all Democrats into a united "angry" party

That's a myth. But it's a necessary myth, to justify the real counter-anger from the right.

Great post.

I am going to cite some examples of the angry right. I know that all of the right wingers will spew the same rhetoric as the bloated talk show hosts do: "it's the liberal media." (Is liberal media the most cliche, banal and trite political saying ever?)

1. Dr. Hager: Forcibly Sodomized his wife
2. The loons in Butler County, PA who burned books related to homosexuality because they found the material offensive to "their god."
3. Neo-Nazi groups: Hammerskins, AryanNation, Christian Identity, World Church of the Creator, KKK. All claim to be Christians. Don't forget the ones overseas: Ragnarok.
4.Falwell's comment after 9/11.
5. Ann Coulter saying that liberals should be physically intimidated (shortly afterwards, Judge Lefkow's family members were slain in her home).
6.McVeigh
7. Pro-life groups who bomb abortion clinics and kill people (but they are pro-life).
8. Alan Keyes calling Cheney's daughter a "Selfish Hedonist."
9.Homophobia
10. Rampant Sexism
11. Publications: American Renaissance, The National Alliance, National Vanguard. Other media: Resistance Records.

I think that just about clears it up.

For the record anonymous idiot, I knew the answer about the original post, I read both posts HELLO!. MY question was about how ALL leftist and liberal blogs ALL basically post the same stuff, written virtually in the same manner and virtually at the same time?
Those were just examples moron. U pay attention!

10:28 AM
Anonymous alias: "cutiepie" johnson said...

Snoop: If you "read both blogs," then you know that JABBS wrote an article, Daily Kos linked to it, a slew of people saw it, and some of them commented on it on their blogs, with links back to JABBS.

It's not much different than a bunch of newspapers reporting on a speech by a politician.

But you found this to be a bad thing, and wrote a patronizing article on your blog, suggesting this was an example of liberals marching lockstep.

Either you misunderstood the facts, or you twisted them to make your point. Which is it?

You argue that liberal blogs all post the same stuff at the same time. But that's rarely the case.

The only time you'll see all liberal blogs posting on the same topic is when there is a national story -- such as the state of the union address, or a story that grabs the nation's attention, like Terri Schiavo or Cindy Sheehan. And it's not unreasonable that a bunch of people writing separate blogs would come up with their own take on the story of the day.

And, as you probably know, the same holds true among conservative blogs. That may not fit in with your stereotyping and patronizing, but any claim you make about redundancy among liberal blogs could be made just as easily about conservative blogs.

You can debate whether Rudolph represents American Christians, but I don't think there's any question that Pat Reobertson does. And when he calls for the assasination of another country's leader, I think that qualifies as terrorist. Certainly angry. Media Matters has the details of Pat and other angry right wingnuts.

Hmmm... let's see... let's use an objective standard: which side of the political spectrum, over the past 100 years, has been responsible for the most property damage, injuries to police, injuries and deaths of human beings, etc...

Hmmm... Stalin, Mao and other communists... mass murderers on the left

Hmmm... violent protesters... wackos from the Left

Now, on the wacko Right... who can you point to? Well, Hitler was a National SOCIALIST, so you can't really call him right wing...

Saddam Hussein was a Baathist, which is also a form of socialist...

Ahh... Timothy McVeigh... an athiest and a right wing nut... OK, I'll give you that one

Abortion Bombing Foes... OK, I'll give you that one...

Now, tally both sides and subtract...

The ANGRY LEFT WINS!
