You Can't Make This Stuff Up ...

"At two hearings of the House Homeland Security Committee last month, Rep. John Linder (R-GA) blasted federal spending that focuses on 'looking for toenail clippers and box cutters.'

'It is my view that no airplane will ever hit a commercial building - which is the only value [terrorists] have in taking out large numbers of people,' he said at an April 27 hearing. He added that 'passengers won't allow that to happen.'

'And if an airline is blown up in the air, that is a very bad circumstance for 200 or 300 people, but it is not a catastrophe,' Linder said. He made similar remarks April 13 to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff."

(Note: Linder spokeswoman Gretchen Learman later acknowledged to the Daily News that Linder's comments were insensitive.)

That was an incredibly stupid thing to say, and even worse to repeat. After reading it a couple of times though, I think the underlying sentiment is not entirely off base.

stupid choice of words but meaning behind it was pretty clear and i dont disagree. except to say that loss of 200 lives is a catastrophe, just not in the proportions some are considering.

just amazing how much politics prevents this country from protecting itself. the lengths we would have gone to protect the people here if there were not a presidential election.....who knows. certainly more would have been done about the borders, which are pathetic. i have to believe that maybe we do have them on the defensive these days-because it seems to me it is pretty damn eas to get in this country and wreak havoc.
